The Playhouse at 243 Mamaroneck Avenue opened Dec. 5, 1925, as a community theater. But it was not Mamaroneck's first movie house on Mamaroneck Avenue. Before The Playhouse was The Auditorium. It was a bit farther up Mamaroneck Avenue on the same side, about where 349 Mamaroneck Avenue (Juarez Grocery) is today. A Charlie Chaplin short film, "The Bank," is one of the "photo plays" featured in a circa-1915 photo.
The Playhouse succeeded The Auditorium and offered live vaudeville performances early on and movies for decades. The single-screen Playhouse was converted into a four-screen theater in 1970, then closed in 2014. It is being resurrected with eight screens.
